Why is water coming from my outdoor unit?
During heating, a heat pump can release water as its defrost cycle melts frost on the outdoor coil. During cooling, moisture may come from condensation or a nearby condensate drain. Water near the unit is not enough to identify its source or prove that everything is working normally. The equipment type, operating mode and drainage location matter.
Is water during heat-pump defrost normal?
Meltwater can accompany defrost. It should not be dismissed when there is persistent ice, loss of heating or water collecting where it can cause damage. Read Trane's defrost explanation and our guide to outdoor-unit steam versus smoke.
What about water while the AC is cooling?
The indoor cooling coil removes moisture from air, and that water normally leaves through a drainage system. A drain outlet near the outdoor equipment can make the source confusing. Do not assume a puddle comes from inside the outdoor unit. ENERGY STAR includes condensate-drain inspection in maintenance because a blocked drain can damage a home.
When should I ask for help?
Request evaluation if water reaches the home, drainage changes noticeably, ice persists or heating or cooling stops working properly. Stay away from water near electrical equipment. For an immediate electrical hazard, move to safety and call emergency services. Do not remove panels, chip ice or try to clear a line without knowing its purpose.
What should I tell Amazing Air Solutions?
Describe whether the thermostat is on heat or cool, where you can safely see the water and whether comfort has changed. Request a San Antonio service visit to identify the cause rather than ordering a repair based on a puddle alone. Our documented condensate-drain service example illustrates a different drainage issue, not a diagnosis of your system.
